Choosing the musicians to entertain at your wedding can be a daunting task. First, you’ll want to decide between a live band or a DJ. Because bands generally have at least three or four members, they tend to be more costly than DJs, who usually work alone. DJs also typically provide a wide variety of musical styles for every taste — and quite frankly, we’ve heard them all at Georgia mountain weddings, from classical to classic rock.
On the other hand, there’s nothing like live music to get the party going. And if you’re looking for an entertaining master of ceremonies for your wedding, an experienced lead vocalist used to the spotlight might make a better connection with your guests than a DJ who isn’t really a performer.
We’ve worked with both DJs and wedding bands at our popular North Georgia wedding sites. Whichever you prefer, we’ve learned that there are several important factors to consider as you make your decision.
Performance Video and Live Gigs
We can’t emphasize this enough — if you can’t view video of live performances or attend a club to see a performance, find someone else! There’s no other way to know if a band or DJ is the right choice for you.
You’ll want to know how much equipment the band or DJ is bringing to the wedding, and how much time and space they’ll require to set up. If the equipment includes extra large speakers, you may want to check into the possibility of draping them with a light cloth cover to dress them up a bit without dampening the sound.
Most DJs and bands can fill a banquet hall with sound comfortably. But things get a bit more complicated for brides who are planning outdoor weddings in the North Georgia mountains. Ask your performers to check out the venue in advance so they’re aware of space, electrical, and acoustic concerns. This ensures your DJ or band will be well prepared to perform in the conditions of your chosen venue.
Attire and Other Stylistic Choices
It’s important to iron out questions of appearance in advance. If you want your band or DJ to dress formally, let them know right away. If you have any concerns about inappropriate attire, add a line about proper dress in your contract.
You’ll also want to ensure that your performers are flexible and knowledgeable enough to provide the styles of music you and your guests will enjoy. A band should be able to provide you with a list of songs they’re ready to perform, while DJs should have a notebook containing the names of all the songs they can play.
Make sure your contract lists the names of all the performers who will entertain at your wedding. This is especially important with popular DJs, who might overbook and send a replacement to work your event. Generally, equipment fees are absorbed by the performer, so make sure this is clearly spelled out in the contract as well.
Your contract should also specify the number and length of band sets (usually three 45-minute sets) and the break time between sets. Set up time, starting time and ending time are also essential parts of your performer contract. It’s also a good idea to agree on a price for performing past the set ending time, and memorialize that in the contract as well.
